Memorial Monument for the Victims of Steam Ship Indigirka
This memorial was erected in 1971 in honor of the more than 700 people who lost their lives when the SS Indigirka, a former Soviet ship used for transportation of freight and passengers, ran aground and capsized during a blizzard off the coast of Hamaonishibetsu Port near Sarufutsu Village in December 1939. The monument commemorates the occurrence of one of the most significant disasters in the history of global maritime transportation, recognizes the efforts of those who saved approximately 400 lives and expresses thoughts and prayers for those who lost their lives. It stands as proof of a love of humanity that transcends national borders and continues to act as a heartfelt expression of important values to visitors to this day.
